Redeemer Selected as Hosts For 2012 Badminton Championships

Badminton Championships are Coming to Redeemer

The top badminton players in the province are heading to Ancaster! Plans are already underway and excitement is building as Redeemer University College was named as the host for the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Badminton Provincial Championships. The official announcement was made this past week at the OCAA Annual General Meeting in Toronto.

Redeemer will look to build on its success of hosting Provincial Championships in the past and host a memorable event for the top badminton student-athletes in Ontario. The last time Redeemer hosted a Provincial Championship they welcomed the OCAA’s top volleyball teams in 2010 for the Men’s Volleyball Provincial Championships. The event garnered a lot of attention both provincially and nationally as Redeemer Royals fans came out in record numbers and filled the gymnasium to show their support. The Royals are known as having some of the greatest and loudest fans in the country.

Now, the Royals varsity badminton team will get their chance to play in front of a home crowd should they qualify for the Championships. The way the program is progressing, they should have a great opportunity. After the badminton program was cut at Redeemer in 1992-93, the team has made waves in the OCAA since it was resurrected in 2009. In its first year back men’s singles player Randall Brus won a Provincial bronze medal. This past year, Randall finished 4th at the Championships but overall, the team finished second at the Regional Championships and had players qualify for the Provincials in men’s singles, women’s singles, and women’s doubles.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to showcase the provinces top talent in collegiate badminton”, said Peter Reid, Tournament Chair for the upcoming Championships. “We look forward to hosting the Championships and putting on a memorable event for the student-athletes, Redeemer and its fans, and the community”.

The tournament will run over three days from February 16th – 18th , 2012 with all matches taking place at the Redeemer University College Athletic Centre.
